Kelsey-Seybold Onsite Clinics, Caring for Employees at the Workplace and Beyond

It’s easy to assume that all onsite workplace clinic programs are the same—they’re an added benefit for employees, they improve access to care, and hopefully reduce lost work days for employees. But in a world that thrives on touchpoints, what happens when an onsite clinic is unable to treat the condition at hand? Where do those employees go? Who handles the next step?

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic physicians have cared for Houstonians since 1949 with a special brand of collaborative and preventive medicine. It is this same philosophy of care that drives their onsite clinic program, and the reason why employers in the Houston-Galveston region have chosen Kelsey-Seybold to deliver care to employees at the worksite since 1966. The beauty of this program is the level of integration an employer can achieve because of the coordination built into an accountable care organization like Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

Kelsey-Seybold’s first experience with onsite occupational medicine and primary care was no ordinary client. From 1966 to 2016, Kelsey-Seybold was the selected contractor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPD). In 1966, the organization contracted with NASA’s Manned Spaceflight Program to provide comprehensive occupational health services across a range of flight, occupational, and emergency medical services, including both clinical and administrative support.

In 2016, Kelsey-Seybold was selected as the provider of choice to offer an onsite nurse navigator for the Transport Workers Union (TWU). In this type of onsite arrangement, the nurse navigator helps employees access care where and when they need it, connecting employees to Kelsey-Seybold providers through Virtual Health capabilities, or by assisting in arranging needed appointments at a nearby clinic location with an in-network provider.

Another success story is the Harris County Wellness Clinic which was established in 2018. At this onsite clinic, county employees in the downtown area have access to a dedicated provider who can offer physicals, ill visits, immunizations, onsite labs, prescription delivery to employee offices, as well as a connection to specialty providers through Video Visits.
