US Joins 27 Countries In AI Safety Summit In UK

Delegates from 28 countries, including the US and China met this Wednesday in the first international AI Safety Summit held in the UK.

The group of 28 countries agreed to work together to address the potential risks that AI could bring in the future. All countries signed a document called “The Bletchley Declaration” saying that “There is potential for serious, even catastrophic, harm, either deliberate or unintentional, stemming from the most significant capabilities of these A.I. models,” and resolving that the countries will work together to “ensure human-centric, trustworthy and responsible A.I.”

Though the declaration does not present specific actions of how the countries will regulate AI development, UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the declaration and the summit was an important achievement, as it will require the countries to hold a series of further meetings.

The event also gathered companies, researchers, and civil society groups. Even SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to discuss AI with Sunak Thursday Night. Other notable attendees include European Commission President Ursula von der Leye, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and executives from AI companies like Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.

The two-day summit is hosted at Bletchley Park, 50 miles north of London, where English mathematician Alan Turing deciphered the Nazi’s Enigma code during World War II.
