Missouri City Welcomes Robin Elackatt as New Mayor

Missouri City recently elected Robin Elackatt, one of the first mayors of Asian heritage in the Houston area. Robin Elackatt is also the second India native to fill a top elective post in Fort Bend County in two years, alongside Fort Bend County Judge KP George who assumed office two years ago.

Fort Bend, one of the nation’s fastest-growing counties, with approx. 765,000 residents, nearly 3,000 employees, and an annual budget of over $370 million, has one of the fastest-growing Asian communities in Texas.

“The diverse communities that we have, that’s a strength, not a weakness,” Elackatt said, “That we have people from all over the world.”

Elackatt defeated Ford 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent, according to unofficial election results. In-mail voters gave him the definitive advantage.

Elackatt was first elected to the city council in 2009, and then he got re-elected twice, once in 2011 and then in 2013. He decided to run for mayor when he realized he didn’t like the direction the city was heading, particularly when the city manager was unexpectedly fired and replaced without much discussion.

He is set to strengthen the local economy and wishes to repair public spaces such as streets and sidewalks. He has also pledged to prioritize public safety and organize public events to listen to what the people believe Missouri City needs.
